Howat, Roy (2023) Between and beyond the perforations in Debussy’s Welte rolls. In: Claude Debussy: die Klavieraufnahmen. Wolke Verlags GmbH, Hofheim am Taunus, pp. 62-91.
Fourteen of Debussy’s piano pieces, from the years 1903–10, figure on the six Welte-Mignon reproducing rolls of his playing issued in 1913... Although these recordings have often been ascribed to 1 November 1913, the date on Debussy’s oft-reproduced panegyric to Welte, the complex editing needed to make recorded originals play back necessitates an earlier recording date, and they have now been dated to summer 1912, when Welte transported his recording equipment to Paris, recording some 140 rolls from 19 artists between July and mid-August.
