Abstract

Review of a survey of jazz on film and television in the 20th century, based on three case studies. These comprise Len Lye: A colour box (1935), Gjon Mili's Jammin' the blues (1944) and the BBC's Jazz 625 (1964-66). The book situates these in a critical discourse that seeks to explore jazz as a "dissonant" image, i.e. at odds with the format in which it is presented
