If Debussy’s Welte roll of La Cathédrale engloutie provides the most important single piece of information for performers, that of La plus que lente is the most broadly revealing. Not only does it show more variants than virtually all his other piano rolls taken together, but its very existence implicitly bears on the piece’s still-debated place in Debussy’s œuvre (and its artistic worth)
